Webmaster Speaks - Website, BOD, Rumors
To Set the Record Straight
How many of you remember Barco Davidson? He started the league web site by hosting it on his own AOL space - way before we had a DOC. I worked with Barco from that time in 96-98 until present day. A lot of tools have been developed since then that we use to help run the Club. One tool that has been essential to the success of our club is the on line scheduling. I created the scheduling program not upon request but for my own purposes as a scheduler.
When I was first elected on the board, I was asked to take over scheduling and post the schedules on the web. Any games that needed to be rescheduled (rain outs, conflicts, etc) were handled by another person. And the posting of game results was handled by yet another person. Well the rescheduler soon quit and was handed the honor. This was a very time consuming task. I would receive 5 or 6 phone calls a night from people asking field availability which became very time consuming. I quickly created the program you all use today. It eliminated the need for 3 people to work on scheduling. Now one person (me) could handle the schedules, rescheduling, and score/results posting. My knowledge in the E-Commerce world was beneficial for the club as I put together an on-line registration system - we were the first club in the state to use on line registration.
Although I created the scheduling program, the news library, the polls, email lists, and the picture gallery all on my own time and with no cost to the league or the members, the registration and select payments system had to be paid for. The registration system cost $2000, and the select payment system cost $1440. I also can't claim web site design through the many faces of the web site as that was performed by Ernest Fretwell, a professional web designer. The total cost of 3 sites and the many graphic updates has been less than $1000. Payments to myself have totaled $1300 over the entire life span since I took over the webmaster duties. Most of that was reimbursement for the secure certificates for the web site to enable your credit card orders.
Five years ago, a system like this would cost over $30,000 to develop. Today most on line registration companies want $500 per season and $1 to $2 per registration. Five years of even that would be $15,000 to $25,000. I would say I've done my part in saving us $9,000 - $24,000. I have always been in the IT business. At one point, I was going after web accounts, but I quickly shifted gears 5 years ago because the web is not a very profitable business. Since that time, I have sold off all web accounts and have been supporting the club web site for free. I have given over ten years of service to the web site. Not only have I made my job (as scheduler) easier, but I've made the job of many others easier - especially our administrators.
I found it very discouraging that our last board (minus two) wanted to get rid of me because I disagreed with their thinking and I was determined to inform the membership of their unwarranted changes. What is even more perplexing is that they expected to have access to the same tool sets I created for free. After my removal from the board by certain individuals, I no longer feel the need to provide those certain individuals access to my free tool set. The registration system and select payment system however is paid for and I'm waiting for instructions from the new board on how to proceed. I assume they are finding a new home for those programs. Other than that, the web site is being run as it always has. Although I've heard rumors that I have "held the web site hostage" (whatever that means), I have posted articles when requested and will continue to do so.
This is your web site, my web site, the web site of all our members - to give and receive information. I am encouraging anyone that would like to help take the site to another level to contact me at once - mstolz@cobbfc.org
